Chile in the middle of a new labor reform

In the framework of the Labor Reform of the Government in Chile, President Sebastián Piñera signed the bill for the reconciliation of work that includes more flexibility

The second project of the Labor Reform in Chile signed on Thursday by Sebastián Piñera proposes a “voluntary flexibilization of the working days with two new modalities: 4 worked days and 3 rest days with 45 hours of weekly stop, or 180 monthly hours with stop 12 hours a day and up to 6 days a week.”

It seems a bit complicated to understand; nevertheless, it is a negotiation that, if approved by the Ministry of Labor, will be established between the worker and the company in which he works.

In the signing of the bill of coalition of work, family and inclusion, Piñera was accompanied by Nicolás Monckeberg, Minister of Labor. The document will be analyzed by the Chamber of Deputies once they vote on the option of legislating the pension reform (May 13).

Certainly, the main proposal of the Government Labor Reform in the South American country is the flexibilization of work schedules that apply to full days of up to 45 hours per week.

According to the proposal, which contains 63 pages, it proposes two work modalities. The first would be “maintain 45 hours per week, but with a distribution of 4 days worked and 3 rest, with a maximum limit of 12 hours of work“, which considers the ordinary day, lunch and overtime. And the second proposal is 180 monthly hours without exceeding 12 hours a day of work with specifications of the day that should appear in the contract appendix.

The reform seeks to generate more rest for the workers. According to the agreement established by the worker, he will be able to work from Monday to Thursday and be free from Friday to Sunday. The discussion includes topics such as overtime, social protection, online workers, sexual and labor harassment and subsidy for employment of people deprived of liberty, among others.
