Chile announces its departure from Unasur

The nation released a communication where it stated the organization "separated from the principles that inspired its creation"

This week the Chilean government announced its departure from the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) through an official statement.

“Following constitutional powers, the President of the Republic has decided to proceed with the denounce, for reasons of State, of the ‘Constitutive Treaty of the Union of South American Nations’, signed in Brasilia, Federative Republic of Brazil, on May 23 of 2008. For the foregoing, according to the provisions of Article 63 of Law No. 18,918, Organic Constitutional Law of the National Congress, the President of the Republic has requested the opinion of the Legislative Power,” the statement said.

On the other hand, they detailed that Unasur “has moved away from the principles that inspired its creation”, adding that today it is a “highly politicized and ineffective institution“.

Not only Chile has initiated procedures to leave the institution, sonce countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Colombia have begun denunciation proceedings against the Constitutive Treaty, besides starting the process to leave the it.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, is seeking to strengthen the Forum for the Progress of South America (Prosur) “a space for dialogue, collaboration and coordination, to face the problems of the present and to take on the challenges and opportunities of the future.”
