British court ordered to freeze $ 1 million in bitcoin in a ransomware case
The court order issued is related to a malware attack against a Canadian insurance company
The United Kingdom Superior Court issued an order for alleged bitcoin (BTC) obtained through a ransomware attack against a Canadian insurance company. The order prevents a person from managing his own assets when they are subject to a claim of ownership, in this case, arising from a crime.
According to information from the source, on January 17, the British judicial body published documents about an attack, in which more than 1 thousand computers of the insurance company were rendered useless through the use of malware that encrypted files making them inaccessible.
Unidentified ransomware attackers demanded $ 1.2 million in Bitcoin in exchange for decrypting or unlocking the data.
The insurer of the Canadian company covered the customer’s losses through cybercrime and agreed with hackers to pay $ 950,000 in bitcoin to decrypt the files and received a tool to unlock them 24 hours after making the payment.
The company needed 10 days to restore all its systems, including 20 servers and 1,000 desktop computers.
