Belarus to launch bitcoin mining with atomic energy

President Alexander Lukashenko released the news about the country's intentions to create cryptocurrency mining farms fed by a new plant under construction

In a recent announcement of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said that the Eastern European nation wants to create mining farms for cryptographic assets powered by atomic power plant under construction.

The installation is built in the district of Astravyets, in the Grodno region, near the border with Lithuania. It would allow Belarus to continue its way towards the digital economy.

The announcement was made before the representatives of the technological industry in the High Technologies Park (HTP), a special economic zone under special fiscal and legal regime in the country and that contributes to the development of the technological industry.

Lukashenko stressed that “Belarus will soon have surplus of electricity that can be used to power new cryptographic mining farms.” He added that the new atomic power station will have two reactors. The first unit is expected to start operating by the end of 2019 and the second in the summer of 2020.

The nuclear power plant will offer a combined capacity of some 2,400 MW, which will be beneficial for the country’s economy, which has the support and enthusiasm of the national president.

It is important to note that the former Soviet republic legalized in 2018 the activities related to cryptocurrencies through the special presidential decree № 8 “On the Development of the Digital Economy” that entered into force on March 28th of that year.
