Authorities dismantle criminal network for audiovisual piracy

The organization dedicated to hacking and storing illegal digital content was dismantled. It had 60 servers in North America, Europe and Asia

The police authorities of 19 countries managed to dismantle a criminal network with 60 servers in North America, Europe and Asia dedicated to pirating and storing illegal digital content, mainly audiovisual productions for film and television from the United States.

The European Police Office (Europol) reported this Wednesday, August 26, that this network was dedicated to obtaining copies on DVD and Blu-Ray of audiovisual content that was not yet available to the public and, through special software, eliminated the protections of “Copyright” to access high definition content.

According to the European authorities, the group has been under investigation for four years and during its active period it managed to illegally distribute hundreds of films and television programs, “including practically all the films of the major studios in the United States.”

“The group caused tens of millions of dollars in losses to production studios, mainly the American film and television industry and the companies that support them, as a result of intellectual property infringements,” the European police office said in a release.

It should be noted that Europol supported the joint work of the authorities of 19 countries, which resulted in the dismantling of 60 servers in Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Norway and Spain, among other countries, and the arrest in Cyprus and the US of two alleged members of the group.
