Artificial intelligence continues to impact Microsoft

The president of the technology company approves emergency shutdown buttons for artificial intelligence

More than 800 business and technology leaders explore future trends in the new economy, and some of them have returned to think of Skynet, the rebel artificial intelligence that almost annihilates the human race in the “Terminator” film saga.

The debate of ideas has been generated at the GeekWire 2019 Summit held in Seattle, after a comment on regional and industrial aeronautical economics emerged following the words of Microsoft president Brad Smith himself.

Smith refers to the need for both the technology industry and the government to come together to address the dangers of AI and machine learning. “We are the first generation to decide how machines will make these decisions and what kind of ethical principles will guide your decision making. It’s not about pressing, but we’d better do it right.”

Reliable artificial intelligence

The European Union has already put on the table the debate about the need for this emergency shutdown system in 2017 and that, to date, the existence of this mechanism is one of the phases to boost reliable AI.

In 2017 two researchers – Laurent Orseau of Deep Mind, and Stuart Amstrong, of the University of Oxford – studied the solution of the shutdown buttons, aimed at “preventing the machine from following a harmful sequence of actions for the human being or for the enviroment”. However, controlling AI and providing security to humanity has not been considered an easy task, because continuing to explore this issue around other areas can potentially cause harm to human beings.
