Apple works on its own modem for smartphones

Apple has begun to develop its own modem for mobile phones, a component that would help reduce dependence on Qualcomm and which follows the development and introduction of its M1 processor.

In a meeting with employees, the senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, reported that the company had already begun the development of its own internal modems for mobile phones, which “would enable another strategic transition,” according to sources close to this ad with Bloomberg.

The company with the bitten apple acquired most of Intel’s smartphone modem business in mid-2019, a move that was known after the agreement reached between Qualcomm and Apple by which the former agreed to provide its chips to Apple during six years.

The development takes advantage of the acquisition closed with Intel, which has allowed it to organize a team of specialized engineers, which is already working on the chip and which would reduce dependence on Qualcomm, current supplier of modems for the iPhone 12 series with 5G connectivity.

This decision also follows the development of its own processor, M1, which Apple introduced together with the new MacBook and Mac mini computers, in early November.
