Chilean BancoEstado suffers cyber attack

This weekend the authorities warned about a hack to the web platform of the main Chilean bank in which they did not rule out data hijacking

BancoEstado, the most important in Chile in terms of number of customers, was the victim of a cyber attack this Sunday, according to the authorities who were forced to suspend all services on its web platform in addition to closing branches in the country.

The incursion of hackers through malicious software seriously affected the operation of BancoEstado’s platform. Investigations continue to establish the responsibilities of this attack that has put the data of some 13 million customers at risk.

According to preliminary reports, it was known that it is a “ransomware attack, so they do not rule out that the user database is at risk.” The president of BancoEstado, Sebastián Sichel, issued a statement to relieve the fear of the bank’s users, which increased due to the comments about the event through social networks.

For his part, the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Víctor Pérez, declared that the attack on BancoEstado “should be a matter of special concern for all […] it was a very deep cyber attack, through a virus that has penetrated the operational issue “.

A preliminary information regarding the responsibility for this attack is directed to the ransomware identified as Sodinokibi. It is a “cybernetic virus, which had been detected for the first time in a campaign in 2019, operates by exploiting vulnerabilities, collecting basic data from the system and then encrypting the information.” It is used by cybercriminals to request a cryptocurrency ransom in exchange for releasing the information.

The director of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team in Latin America Dmitry Bestuzhev favors this possibility, stating that this ransomware is “exclusive for commercial or governmental entities.”
