Denmark could build an energy island

The Ministry of Energy and Supplies plans to invest approximately 41,000 million dollars to cover the demand of 10 million homes

The Government of Denmark began work to determine the potential location on one or several “energy islands” of a mega park of wind turbines with the capacity to generate at least 10 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, which would cover the demand of 10 million homes, and a investment of up to 41,000 million dollars, according to the Ministry of Energy, Supplies and Climate of Denmark.

The Danish Government has allocated a total of approximately 9 million dollars for financing the development of various technological alternatives, although the Danish Ministry estimates that the total investment required for the project will range between 20,000 and 40,000 million dollars.

The agency emphasizes that “the vast majority of investment needs will be covered by private investment”, while the State will have to finance to a large extent the development of technologies that contribute to an efficient use of the large amount of electricity that a Energy island could produce, so that the energy generated by wind turbines can be used in different sectors of society, such as transport and industry.

In this sense, studies should confirm the practical feasibility of establishing one or more energy islands both in relation to nature, the environment and planning, as well as providing financial calculations that can serve as a basis for making a final decision.

In this way, the work will be incorporated into the negotiations on climate action plans that will begin in 2020, the Danish Ministry said.
