European Union bans Siemens-Alstom merger

The European Union decided to stop the project between the German Siemens and the French Alstom

The mega project from which an authentic global giant of the railway sector could have emerged is frustrated by the European Union.

Although it is not an official news from the president of Siemens, Joey Kaeser, he complained that this project, announced in September of 2017, be in the hands of “retrograde technocrats”.

The problem is that the concessions offered by both manufacturers, Siemens and Alstom, have not met the expectations of Vestager who would have launched an internal recommendation to ban the agreement.

The vote will take place next week and although it is possible that a political debate will be held, it is expected that only a few commissioners will put “buts” on the recommendation of Vestager, which undoubtedly implies the rejection of the project.

Given the situation exposed, the president of Siemens tried to put pressure when he said in the presentation of results that “it will be interesting to see if the future of mobility will be decided by retrograde technocrats or by Europeans who look to the future”.
