Presidential and gubernatorial candidates will only be eligible for Mexican citizenship
A decree issued by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum a couple of weeks ago established Mexican citizenship as the only requirement for candidates for president or for Head of Government of Mexico City
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a decree approved by a majority in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, establishing Mexican citizenship as the only requirement for candidates for president, governor, and Head of Government of Mexico City.
The new requirement, promoted by the federal government, will take effect in 2028 and stipulates that no president or governor may hold dual citizenship.
In this way, the country makes it clear that those with dual nationality who wish to run for the aforementioned positions must renounce their citizenship before formally registering with the Mexican electoral authorities.
