Meta announced Facebook’s biggest redesign in years
The social network Facebook is heading for the biggest redesign in years, according to the announcement made by parent company Meta recently at the Facebook IRL event in Austin. The platform is determined to win over generation Z
Meta announced the first redesign of Facebook during the recent Facebook IRL event held in Austin, Texas. The changes seek to offer a more personalized and dynamic experience to win over generation Z.
According to the parent company of the social network, the objective is to attract young users, who search Facebook for interesting content, share audiovisual material, as well as stay up to date on cultural events.
In this sense, Meta’s announcement revolved around the new features that products such as Facebook Dating or Messenger will offer, in addition to new tabs such as Groups or Explore.
The tests being carried out in Austin, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Phoenix allow users to discover local content of interest in a single tab. Thus, “the platform has begun to integrate a new tab called Local” where users can find local information from the Marketplace, Groups and Events sections.
Facebook is also testing a “Weekly and Weekend Summary for Events”, specifically with an agenda of upcoming events that notifies users through notifications with data based on their particular interests.
Another new feature is the Feed, “a new sliding section that highlights the best content on the social network related to your area”. In the “Explore” tab there will be personalized content to explore in depth thanks to the social network’s algorithm, which includes areas such as personal growth, arts, travel, sports, decoration and much more.
Videos, full-screen player and new AI assistant in Groups
Facebook is making progress in conquering the youngest with new features in the audiovisual field. “A new updated Video tab will be introduced soon that will make it easier for people to discover Reels, videos and live streams that interest them.” Also, “full-screen playback of this content will be included.”
In the Groups tab, Facebook will make it easier to answer questions with an AI-based assistant. “If the Group administrator decides to activate this feature, every time a new member enters it, they will be able to open a chat with the Group’s AI and ask the Group questions they have about it and access relevant posts within it.” The tests include selected Groups in the US and Canada.
Facebook Dating and Messenger are also updated
To strengthen Facebook Dating, the network launched Matchmaker, “a tool that allows you to invite up to five friends to choose potential matches for you.”
Regarding Messenger, earlier this year, the Notes feature was introduced in the section to “share how you feel.” With the redesign, you can include music or mentions. On the other hand, the Memories feature is now available to relive and re-share moments posted in the past.
Communities arrive in Messenger
It is a function that allows small and medium-sized communities to be connected through shared interests. Users have the option to create multiple chats according to the topics that the group handles, in order to organize and facilitate conversations within a larger Community. The management and moderation of your community is possible without the need to create a Group on Facebook and grow a community by invitation through the QR code.
Content monetization
A few weeks ago, Facebook introduced its “Imagine” tool that allows users access through the Feed, the Stories composer and the profile page. Earlier, in early 2024, they launched AI-powered Comment Summaries in Public Groups, Pages, and Creators. Precisely to support those who produce content, Facebook is launching a new monetization program that will allow them to expand “the opportunities for them to earn with more content formats. Meta is also planning to test monetization options in Stories in the coming months.”
