Young businessman wins the presidency in El Salvador

Nayib Bukele, a young man of 37 years, is the new president of the Central American country after obtaining the majority of votes this Sunday before the traditional parties

Winds of change are perceived in the political sphere of Central America, after the triumph in the presidential elections in El Salvador of the right-wing GANA candidate, Nayib Bukele. The young businessman is the youngest politician in the entire region.

With just 37 years, the so-called “candidate for change”, achieved a historic victory this Sunday, February 3 to obtain more than 53% of the votes in just a first round before the candidates of the traditional parties ARENA and FMLN.

Bukele, who was Mayor of San Salvador (capital of the country) in the period 2015-2018, had a campaign marked by intense activity in social networks unlike traditional rallies and campaign events.

The young man of Palestinian origin also offered an image outside the known canons, wearing a casual outfit, with a leather jacket and dark glasses in his presentations, which could be the main attraction for the current generation, called millennials.

However, his fresh image and the promise of a different policy do not protect him from the great challenges that the new president will face. Poverty, violence, foreign policy, employment, boost to the economy and multilateral relations, among others.

Bukele’s detractors indicate that he does not have a majority and that he will not be able to govern for a single group, referring to the opposition. In any case, the new president-elect will have time to analyze all the challenges that await him until his inauguration in the month of June.
