US could approve a new trade agreement

It is presumed that by the end of 2019 the House of Representatives could approve a new T-MEC that modifies the rules on automotive and digital commerce

The House of Representatives of the United States could approve a new North American T-MEC trade agreement at the end of 2019 willing to modify the rules on automotive and digital commerce, Mexican labor regulations, intellectual property and dispute resolution systems for the investors.

The president of Congress, Nancy Pelosi, said she “would like to approve it this year, that would be my goal,” she stressed during a press conference, hoping that the Senate will then address the issue without delay.

The approval of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in the lower house in the coming weeks increases the chances that the text will be ratified in Congress before the 2020 election season, already hit by trial procedures political and other legislative priorities.

After months of discussions with the United States trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, who negotiated the T-MEC at the behest of President Donald Trump, Pelosi said on Thursday that things were “moving positively… I think if we can take this where it should be, which is imminent, it could be a good model for future trade agreements,” Pelosi said.

This agreement was ratified by Mexico in June, but in Washington the Democrats who control the lower house of Congress have asked for guarantees for the application of new Mexican labor laws that protect the US industry from unfair competition, among other claims.
