The EP ready to launch a permanent commission on tax fraud

The European Parliament has finished all the necessary for the creation of a permanent sub commission on fiscal and financial crimes

The commission will continue the work carried out during the last legislature by other special commissions that were dedicated to investigating different tax scandals, such as the so-called “Panama Papers.” This was agreed on Monday night by the coordinators of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the Eurochamber, as reported in a statement by the group of The Greens.

The proposal must now be approved by the Conference of Presidents, which brings together the leaders of the different political groups and the president of the institution, David Sassoli. The exact mandate of the subcommittee must also be established during this meeting.

The deputy of Catalonia in Comú, Ernest Urtasun, stressed that this agreement is “a victory” for all those who wish to put an end to the abusive tax practices of large companies and illegal activities that undermine public revenue.

“Finally, the (European) Parliament will have the tools to be proactive and stronger in the fight against tax evasion and tax fraud,” said the MEP, who also added that the European Chamber will have a lot of work to do to ensure that the Member States meet the social demands in this area.

In his opinion, with the creation of a permanent sub – commission focused on tax fraud, the European Parliament is sending a strong message to the rest of European institutions: “Our tax system does not work and we will only fix it if we work together at European level”.
