Giuseppe Conte resigns as prime minister of Italy

This Tuesday he will present his resignation to the president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, due to the open crisis of his government

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Tuesday that he will present his resignation to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, as a result of the government crisis opened by the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, whose “irresponsibility” has criticized harshly in the Senate.

“At the end of the debate I will go to see the President of the Republic to inform him of the interruption of the experience of government and to give him the resignation,” Conte announced during his speech before the Senate.

“The ongoing crisis inevitably compromises the action of the Government that stops here, but much remains to be done,” acknowledged the Prime Minister, who in his speech has accused Salvini of “political opportunism” and irresponsibility for bringing down the Government.

Conte’s resignation leaves Mattarella with the following steps the government must take. In this regard, the head of state should open consultations with the leaders of the different political parties to see if there is a possibility of forming an alternative government or else electoral advancement is necessary, as Salvini wishes.
