Facebook announces the launch of payment platform

The company created by Mark Zuckerberg presented "Facebook Pay", a tool that will allow purchases and donations, among other functions

The technology company Facebook announced a new functionality within its family of applications called Facebook Pay, a payment gateway that will allow purchases, donations and transfers between individuals.

Facebook Pay “will provide people with a convenient, secure and consistent payment experience on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp,” explained Facebook’s Vice President of Marketplace and Commerce Deborah Liu.

“People already make payments in our applications to buy, donate to different causes and send money to each other. Facebook Pay will facilitate these transactions while still making sure that payment information is safe and secure”, said Liu.

To activate the functionality users of any of the Facebook applications will have to enter the data of a valid PayPal account or a debit or credit card.

The launch of Facebook Pay occurs at a time when Libra, the stable cryptocurrency project led by Facebook, is under scrutiny by regulators in several countries, such as the United States or the European Union.

In fact, in recent weeks the Libra project, which was also designed to allow transactions and payments within the Facebook ecosystem, has lost its four main partners in the payment segment: Visa, Mastercard, eBay and Stripe.
