Criminal gang kidnapped cryptocurrency merchants in India

The local authorities detained the criminal group who tortured and kept three men in captivity for 15 days while awaiting the cancellation of the requested bailout of 80 bitcoins

A group of criminals operating in India kidnapped and tortured cryptographic coin dealers demanding a payment of 80 bitcoins. The ordeal lasted more than two weeks for the victims and finally came to an end when seven people linked to the gang were arrested.

The three men were held captive inside a building, subjected to beatings and torture, Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) Vikas Sharma explained to the local media.

Those involved were identified as Luftan Shaikh, 19, Mohammad Shazad, 36, and Malang Shah, 44. At the end of the operation, the local police seized weapons and vehicles belonging to the criminals.

The authorities maintained: “The gang kidnapped Shaikh and Shazad, two bitcoin traders and demanded 80 BTC (around US$ 820 thousand at the time of capture). Shah was kidnapped two days later. The band demanded 10 lakh (USD $ 15,000) from their relatives.”

The officers were alerted of the plan after a 20-minute chase that resulted in the arrest of a suspect who was seen carrying a gun. The detainee was the one who told the officers about the kidnapping and informed the location of the building to the security agents.
