Catalan government considers the blockchain for voting system

The head of the council of citizen participation of the Generalitat de Catalunya affirms that the authority is considering the possibility of using blockchain in the voting system of the community

The Generalitat de Catalunya approved a preliminary bill to establish an electronic voting system for residents abroad in major elections and other electoral processes in the autonomous community.

Ismael Peña López, director of Citizen Participation of the Generalitat de Catalunya, revealed that the government expects to introduce an external electronic voting system by the year 2020, as well as extending electronic voting to all voters.

The director said that regardless of the technology that the government decides to use in the voting system, it must instill confidence. La Vanguardia quotes Peña López: “It’s a matter of awareness. The government is more respectful than a trade. I would like to think that we are able to convince people that it is reliable.”

The Spanish news agency El Confidencial reported in October last year that the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont requested donations in crypto from the public. Puigdemont requested crypto donations to hide financial support for the politicians of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
