Amazon to launch interactive Lord of the Rings game

The e-commerce giant announced that it will join the team of Athlon Game Studios to continue with the creation of this delivery

Amazon confirmed its participation in the development of a new massively multiplayer online game (MMO) and free of the saga The Lord of the Rings for computers and consoles by the hand of Athlon Game Studios.

The video game was announced for the first time last year by the Chinese parent company of Athlon Game Studios, Leyou Technologies. They had revealed that it will be developed around the time of the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, using intellectual property licensed by Middle-earth Entertainment.

As reported by Medium, the videogame division Amazon Game Studios joins this MMO game project that will be inspired by the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien, which at the moment does not have a release date.

This new project is the second videogame launch of Amazon Game Studios, after the premiere of The Grand Tour Game last year for PlayStation and Xbox. Amazon already has previous experience with the development of multiplayer games since its game MMO New World is in development stage.

Amazon Game Studios and Leyou will jointly develop the game for PC and consoles, and Amazon Game Studios will commercialize and publish the title worldwide with the exception of China, which will be managed by Leyou.

Amazon Game Studios vice president, Cristoph Hartmann, has expressed his commitment to “provide customers with games of the highest quality, both with our own original intellectual property and the most beloved cultural pillars such as Lord of the Rings”.

Hartmann also added that “Tolkien’s Middle Earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it provides our team of experienced MMO developers, from the same studio that New World develops, a great opportunity to play and create.”
