Amazon seeks protection against DDoS attacks

The e-commerce giant applied for a patent to develop a Merkle tree, based on the work test (PoW) used by the bitcoin cryptocurrency

The e-commerce giant, Amazon, applied for a proof of work patent (PoW) in order to avoid distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

As described in the application, this patent will allow to constitute the required work in a PoW configuration. It should be noted that this test is an algorithm that is used in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

“One way to mitigate these attacks is to set up a service such that service requests causes some type of expense, which provides a disincentive to participate in the attack”, the patent description states.

The construction of a Merkle tree, necessary for this task, requires many computer equipment so that Amazon could see very expensive in terms of time, electricity and resources that the PoW is completely carried out.

Although it is clear that Amazon has an interest in the technical details of the cryptocurrency created by Satoshi Nakamoto, it seems that it does not yet want to use it in its platform as a payment method.
