190 branches of 15 local banks in India raided for alleged fraud

An average of 42 new scam cases in 15 local banks that involve at least USD $ 1 billion

At least 15 local banks have been involved in illicit scam acts of at least USD $ 1 billion, among which the participation of the State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest bank stands out.

It is reported that thanks to an effort by the Central Research Office of India known as the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), more than 190 bank branches were searched throughout the country, which represents one of the biggest coordinated searches this year.

The PTI media reported that the CBI teams took statements from the accused with the intention of collecting evidence, extending the operation to 16 states of the country and involving the participation of at least 1,000 officers of the agency. “Of these 42 cases, there are four where the fraud reached more than Rs 1 billion, and another 11 cases with at least Rs 100 million rupees. The investigations also found incriminating documents that we recovered during the raids.”

Most of the raided towns are located in Maharashtra, where the authorities showed up at 58 bank branches, followed by Punjab with 32 offices.

The rest were in the cities of New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Kerala, Telangana, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
